VR Motivator: Mobile Power Generation Solutions

Introducing the VR Motivator

VR Engineering (Pty) Ltd presents the VR Motivator – a cutting-edge mobile power generation solution specifically designed for the mining industry. Since producing our first motivator in 1992, we’ve continuously innovated, offering powerful and reliable equipment tailored to meet the unique needs of our clients.

About VR Engineering

Founded in 1959, VR Engineering has established itself as a leading provider of diesel generators in South Africa. With extensive experience in manufacturing diesel generating sets, we supply a wide range of industries, including mining, agriculture, communications, media, banks, airports, hospitals, data centers, and construction. Our expertise ensures reliable and efficient power solutions customized to meet specific requirements.

Key Features of the VR Motivator

  • On-Demand Power: Provides heavy-duty power ranging from 2,000 to 8,000 kVA for mobile equipment such as draglines, face shovels, and drills.
  • Reduced Downtime: Minimizes downtime when moving shovels and drills, ensuring continuous operation.
  • Mobility: The motivator is self-propelled and can move anywhere in areas where dump trucks operate, driven by a standard truck operator.
  • Safety: Enhanced safety for uphill/downhill movement and cornering, with visible cable/load connection points.
  • Efficiency: Quick and efficient tramming to working areas and back to workshops or storage yards.

Design Background

VR Engineering has been designing and manufacturing truck-mounted motivators since the 1990s. Our extensive experience ensures that we deliver high-quality and reliable solutions for the mining industry. We are currently producing multiple units for existing customers.

Project History and References

Our extensive experience in manufacturing truck-mounted motivators is demonstrated through various successful projects:

  • Mogalakwena Mine: 2 x 3.5MVA single engine 11kV truck-mounted motivators on CAT785 trucks. These units were delivered in 2015 and 2017.
  • Sishen Mine: 1 x 5.75MVA twin engine 6.6kV truck-mounted motivator on a CAT793 truck, completed in 2014 with approximately 2500 running hours.
  • New Vaal Colliery: 1 x 4.5MVA twin engine 6.6kV truck-mounted motivator on a Hitachi R170 truck, completed in 2013 and in current use.
  • Sishen Mine (Older Project): 1 x 4MVA twin engine 6.6kV truck-mounted motivator on a CAT785 truck, originally commissioned in 1997 and reconditioned in 2010.
  • Zwaneng Diamond Mine: 1 x 3MVA twin engine 400:6.6kV truck-mounted motivator, the first of its kind produced in 1992.

Advantages of Truck-Mounted Motivators

  • Mobility: Easily moveable within mining areas, driven by standard truck operators.
  • Manoeuvrability: Capable of reversing, cornering, and making U-turns with ease.
  • Safety: Safer for uphill/downhill movement and cornering, with visible connection points for the driver.
  • Reduced Time: Efficient tramming reduces time to move to work areas and back to storage.

Disadvantages of Truck-Mounted Motivators

  • Cost: The cost of purchasing a suitable new or good used dump truck.
  • Height and COG: Overall height and relatively high center of gravity.
  • Mechanical Failures: Major mechanical failures on the truck can render the motivator unusable.

Scope of Supply

Our scope of supply is designed to provide the best possible solution based on our extensive experience with similar machinery supplied to various open cast mines in South Africa. This ensures efficient manufacturing, practical design, and excellent after-sales service. We base our supply on the successful projects for Mogalakwena Mine, ensuring efficient production and reduced lead times.

Delivery Lead Time

Average delivery lead time for such projects is usually 50-60 working weeks, depending on specific requirements, design work, and workshop loading at the time of order placement. We strive to deliver efficient and timely solutions to meet our clients’ needs. With minimal changes to the scope of supply, delivery lead time may improve to approximately 40-45 working weeks.
